YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Paste any YouTube link — watch, share, Shorts, embed or live — and get every thumbnail resolution that exists for it, ready to view or save.

Paste a link above. All of these forms are understood: youtube.com/watch?v=…, youtu.be/…, youtube.com/shorts/…, youtube.com/embed/…, youtube.com/live/… — or the bare video id. No request is made until you preview or download an image.

The six resolutions, largest first

Each thumbnail file name, its dimensions and whether it is always available
FilePixelsAvailability
maxresdefault.jpg1280 × 720Present only for most modern uploads
hq720.jpg1280 × 720Present only for most modern uploads
sddefault.jpg640 × 480Present only for most modern uploads
hqdefault.jpg480 × 360Always present
mqdefault.jpg320 × 180Always present
default.jpg120 × 90Always present

maxresdefault returns a 404 for videos uploaded before roughly 2015 and for a few vertical Shorts, which is why hqdefault is the safe default in most embed code.

What is a YouTube Thumbnail Downloader?

Every YouTube video has a set of thumbnail images stored at predictable addresses, and a thumbnail downloader is really just a way of turning a link into those addresses. The video id is the eleven-character string that identifies the video, and the images live at i.ytimg.com/vi/<id>/<name>.jpg, where the name is one of a fixed handful of resolutions. Extract the id and you have the whole set.

The set is not uniformly available. YouTube generates six resolutions from a single 16:9 source image: 1280×720 as maxresdefault, 640×480 as sddefault, 480×360 as hqdefault, 320×180 as mqdefault, and 120×90 as default. The three smaller ones have existed since the beginning and always work. maxresdefault and sddefault are only generated when the uploader provided a large enough source, so for older videos — roughly anything uploaded before 2015 — and for some vertical Shorts, maxresdefault returns a 404 and hqdefault is the largest that exists.

Getting the id out of a link is the fiddly part, because YouTube uses at least six URL shapes: watch?v= for the normal player, youtu.be/ for the share shortlink, /shorts/ for vertical videos, /embed/ inside iframes, /live/ for streams and /v/ for the older player. They all contain the same eleven characters, and this tool accepts any of them, plus a bare id pasted on its own.

How to download a YouTube thumbnail

  1. Paste any form of YouTube link into the box — a full watch URL with its query string, a youtu.be shortlink, a Shorts link, an embed URL or just the eleven-character id.
  2. Check the video id the tool has extracted. If the input cannot be parsed, it says so rather than guessing.
  3. Look at the grid. Each resolution shows a preview, its pixel dimensions and the file name, so you can pick the largest one that fits your layout.
  4. Press Download to save the image, or Open full size to view it in a new tab and save it from there.
  5. If maxresdefault shows Not published for this video, use hqdefault at 480×360 — that one exists for every video on the platform.

When to use it

  • Replacing a broken embed thumbnail on your own site, where the video changed and the cached image no longer matches.
  • Building a video listing page that needs consistent 1280×720 images, checking first whether maxresdefault exists for each video.
  • Recovering the artwork for a video you own after losing the original file.
  • Checking what the autogenerated thumbnail looks like for a video that never had a custom one, since YouTube picks a frame from the middle.
  • Producing preview images for a newsletter or a slide deck that links to a video.

Is it private?

Everything runs inside your browser. Your text and files are never uploaded, never stored and never seen by anyone else — including me. You can use the tool with the network tab open and watch no request leave the page. Closing the tab erases the input.

Frequently asked questions

Because YouTube only generates it when the source image the uploader provided was large enough — broadly, 1280×720 or bigger. Older videos and some vertical Shorts only have the smaller sets, so maxresdefault returns a 404. hqdefault at 480×360 exists for every video, which is why it is the safe fallback in embed code.

A browser will not save a cross-origin image through a plain link — the download attribute is ignored and the tab navigates to the image instead. The endpoint fetches the file and returns it with a save prompt, which is the only reliable way to make the button work. Open full size is the alternative if you would rather save it yourself.

No, and this tool deliberately does not offer it. Downloading videos breaches YouTube's terms of service, whereas thumbnails are served from a public image host as ordinary web images. If you need a video offline, YouTube Premium includes that feature officially.

Only for your own videos, or where you have the owner's permission. Thumbnails are the copyright of whoever uploaded the video, and embedding one in a listing page is not automatically fair use. Linking to the video is always safe; rehosting the artwork is not.

Both can be 1280×720, but hqdefault is the older 480×360 file most embeds reference, while hq720 is the modern 720p name. They frequently resolve to the same or near-identical image. Whichever you choose, test it before relying on it, since availability varies per video.
