Tip Calculator

Split a bill, add a tip and round the result — with the tip calculated on the pre-tax amount and per-person shares that add back to the exact total.

Tip presets

Enter the bill to see the tip, the total and the per-person split.

What is a Tip Calculator?

A tip calculator adds a percentage of the bill and divides the result. The interesting decisions are all about what the percentage applies to and how the division is rounded, because both routinely produce a figure that does not match the individual sums.

The first question is whether the tip should be calculated on the pre-tax amount. In most of North America the convention is yes: sales tax is not a service the server provided, and tipping on it means tipping the government as well. Where the bill shows only a total, the pre-tax figure can be recovered by dividing by one plus the tax rate — which is what this tool does when you tell it the tax is already included.

The second is the split. Dividing a total of 86.40 three ways gives 28.80 exactly, but plenty of totals do not divide cleanly, and three people each rounding 28.8333 down to 28.83 leave a cent short. This tool assigns the remainder to the first few people, so the individual shares differ by at most one cent and always add back to the exact total — which matters when each person is paying separately.

How to calculate a tip and split the bill

  1. Enter the bill. Tell the tool whether that figure already includes sales tax, which it usually does.
  2. If tax is included, enter the tax rate so the tip can be calculated on the pre-tax amount. This is the setting people most often overlook.
  3. Pick a tip preset or type a custom percentage, which overrides the presets.
  4. Set how many people are splitting the bill. The individual shares appear underneath the total.
  5. Choose a rounding rule if you want a tidy figure — rounding the total up is the usual choice, and the adjustment is shown separately so you can see exactly what it added.

When to use it

  • Splitting a restaurant bill between a group where everyone pays separately and nobody wants to be a cent out.
  • Working out the tip on the pre-tax amount rather than the total, which is the fairer and more conventional basis.
  • Adding a tip to a taxi or delivery bill where only a total is displayed and the tax is buried inside it.
  • Rounding a total up to a whole number so the payment is a single figure, and seeing exactly how much that added.
  • Checking a service charge the venue has already applied, by entering it as a custom tip percentage and comparing it with what you would have left.

Is it private?

Everything runs inside your browser. Your text and files are never uploaded, never stored and never seen by anyone else — including me. You can use the tool with the network tab open and watch no request leave the page. Closing the tab erases the input.

Frequently asked questions

Pre-tax is the standard convention. Sales tax is a government charge, not a service, so a 20% tip on the pre-tax total is what most people intend when they say 20%. On a large bill the difference is small but real. Tell the tool the tax rate and it will calculate on the correct base.

That is a local custom rather than a calculation. Fifteen to twenty per cent is the usual range for table service in the United States and Canada; in much of Europe and Asia a service charge is included and tipping is optional or a small rounding-up. The presets are there to make the arithmetic quick, not to set the expectation.

Because most totals cannot be divided evenly into whole cents. Rather than let the figures fail to add up, the tool gives the extra cents to the first few people. Each share then differs by at most one cent from the others and the total is exact — which is what matters when everybody pays separately.

It raises the final amount to the next whole unit and shows the difference as a rounding adjustment. The extra goes to the tip in a restaurant context, since the bill itself is fixed. The same option rounds down only as part of rounding to the nearest unit, which can go either way.

Enter the service charge as a custom tip percentage to see what the venue has already added, then decide whether to leave anything on top. In many countries a discretionary service charge is a legal substitute for tipping, and adding a second 20% duplicates it.
